FAQS

QWhat is Angular Contact Ball Bearings?

AAngular contact ball bearings are a type of rolling-element bearing. As the name implies, rolling-element bearings use a roller or ball to carry a load. There are many types of roller-element bearings, including: - Needle - Cylindrical - Spherical - Tapered - Ball Each type of bearing has its own distinct advantages and trade-offs.

QHow to size pillow block bearings

AThe size of a mounted bearing needed for a given application depends primarily on the load and the diameter of the mounted shaft. For heavy-duty loads, here at MDS we offer the “Type E” pillow blocks – which are available in 2-bolt mounts or 4-bolt mounts – and standard pillow blocks for regular loads. The bore diameters can range from 5/8” or ¾” pillow block bearings all the way to 5”.

QWhat is Sleeve Bearings

AA sleeve bearing is a type of plain bearing that can handle high loads and velocities. Sleeve bearings help make engines run smoothly and quietly. These durable and long lasting bearings can also perform well in other high-load, high-velocity applications, such as machines and turbines.

QWhat are the advantages of Cylindrical Roller Bearings?

AThe minimum load of the application. To operate a high speeds, with stable acceleration and deceleration, the bearing must have a minimum axial load applied to the rollers. This prevents damage to the cage from inertial forces as well as sliding or excessive friction. The required minimum load can be decreased with use of quality lubrication. Operating temperature is the range of ambient temperatures in which the bearing operates most reliably. In low-temperature environments, lubricant viscosity increases thereby requiring a higher minimum load. The operating temperatures for spherical roller bearings are particularly high if heat treatment processes are performed on the bearing materials. Reference speed is the rotational speed at which point the heat created from rotation is equivalent to the heat exhausted from lubricant and bearing geometry. Limiting speed is the highest RPM at which the bearing is designed to operate. This is determined by: the strength of the bearing cage, quality of lubrication, the centrifugal and gyratory forces, the precision with which the bearing was manufactured, and the characteristics of the lubricant.
